The Green Button (Grüne Knopf) is the state-approved label for sustainable textiles. The label is underpinned by the Germany Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and indicates to consumers that products awarded with the label comply with obligatory requirements for the protection of people and the environment. The manufacturing process is subject to ecological and social criteria. And the companies themselves are also required to meet high standards with respect to their human rights, social and ecological responsibilities.
The Ministry has commissioned the RAL business area RAL LOGO LICENCE with the job of awarding the label and monitoring its use on the market. RAL examines the applications submitted by companies and awards the licences. Independent testers then monitor compliance with the criteria. RAL is also planning to set up a transparency database that will enable consumers to access further information about the licensed companies. RAL LOGO LICENCE already awards the licences for the use of the test logo of Stiftung Warentest and monitors its correct use in order to prevent any consumer deception.
